| Brevard, NC Announces First Ever White Squirrel Festival |
BREVARD, NC May 19, 2004 -- Things are a little squirrely in the town of Brevard, NC as they prepare for the 1st Annual White Squirrel Festival to be held Saturday and Sunday, May 29th and 30th. "It's an event that's long overdue" explained Margaret Woodard, Executive Director of The Heart of Brevard, a downtown merchants association. "We've got hundreds of these unique furry little friends in this town and they've gained such notoriety that it was high time to recognize them - and we're doing it with a fun filled two day event."
Activities will include guided white squirrel tours for a coveted peak (and possible prized photo opportunity) of the pint sized celebrities. The tour guide will explain the history and origin of the white squirrel as well as other little known white squirrel trivia. A juried art exhibit will be on hand sponsored by The Transylavania County Arts Council as well as local craftsman, vendors and and other selling white squirrel collectibles. Saturday will also feature an antique show. Live music will feed the frenzy for both days, with the ever popular Jupiter Coyote headlining the list of acts on Sunday. (see http://JupiterCoyote.com)
Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris will also release Pisgah Polly, the town's official white squirrel, to see if she gathers nuts or retires to the shade, prognosticating whether we will have a short or long summer. (Weather people take careful note.)
Merchants will join in with a White Squirrel sale and window display contest. Restaurants will feature their own version of a White Squirrel drink in a heated competition for the nuttiest elixir in the town. Those wishing to leave a lasting legacy man enter the White Squirrel Anthem contest sponsored by Heart of Brevard, with the winner becoming the Francis Scott Key of the White Squirrel Festival while earning a prize package and the admiration of musicians countywide. Those gifted with photographic talent are encouraged to enter the White Squirrel Photo Contest headed by Donald Weiser (http://whitesquirrelart.com). Children will be able to construct their own squirrel feeder and the library will have a display of squirrel books and storytelling activities. Festivities will run 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday. For the latest updates, visit http://WhiteSquirrelFestival.com
